Dear Parents,
Welcome to the September 2006 Grandview Library Newsletter.
First, the exciting news. The five elementary school libraries in the East Ramapo School District received a $290,000 grant from the federal government. The money will be used to purchase books ($20,000), technology, educational games, and two new reading programs which blend technology and literature to support our young readers as they move from pre-reading to advanced reading levels. (Visit Wiggle Works and Accelerated Reader on the web to learn more.)
With support from the PTA and our Family Resource Center, we will kick-off the "Books and Beyond" program. This school-wide program is designed to "...increase reading outside the classroom and help parents promote literacy behaviors at home."
In addition to the federal grant, I was able to secure an additional $9,500. With these funds, we will begin a multi-year project to put Smart Boards (interactive white boards) into our classrooms.
This summer, the teacher's professional collection was moved from the library into a teacher's resource room. The entire library is now being used for our library program.
Visit the Grandview Library website and our new companion website, Digital Pencil, to find out how we are using technology. Better yet, stop in for a demo ~ it's not business as usual.
More space, new books, the latest in technology, and your children -- what a combination!
Warmly,
Mrs. Chauncey
