Learning About the Octopus

Recipes

I came across the How to Cook Everything website which has a page of recipes from chef Mark Bittman's books and TV show. I am not a great cook -- probably because I just don't have the time. The recipes on this page are fast and easy to make. I plan to try his

Dear Parents,

We’ve had a busy and productive October in the Grandview Library. This year, we will concentrate on non-fiction and complete several research projects at each grade level.

The Kindergarten and 1st graders just completed a unit on Panda Bears. The children learned facts about pandas, created a fact booklet, and shared facts in a video. Visit the Grandview Library Newspaper to view the video - and find out how we were able to publish our video on the internet without showing children’s faces! You can also view a live Panda Cam at the Atlanta Zoo. The children loved watching the mother and baby interacting. We took observation notes!

Our next Non-Fiction Unit has begun. We are learning about the Octopus. Visit our Octopus Project Organizer to find out which books we are reading, how we are taking notes and to view a few great video clips.

The 2nd and 3rd graders are working on their own books. They are thinking like authors and writing about something they know (themselves). The book Library Mouse, by Daniel Kirk, provided the inspiration for this project. This writing assignment is voluntary, but we all started our stories together in the library. Visit the Library Mouse Project Organizer and ask your child about the project. They have another week to complete their booklets. Those who complete the project will join me in the library for a publishing celebration and their books will be shared with students in all grades.

The 2nd graders are starting an ecology unit. We spent our first classes talking about the meaning of the word “ecology”. They listened to, and sang along with, the book, Hey, Little Ant by Phillip M. Hoose. We will read both fiction and non-fiction books which highlight the importance of caring for our earth. There are many ways
that young children can become mindful caretakers of our planet.

The 3rd graders are learning about economics. We read the book, Grandpa's Corner Store, by Dyanne Disalvo-Ryan. If your child is feeling ambitious, she can get a head start on the Grandpa's Corner Store Project Organizer. (Reminder: Sign-in by clicking Project Organizers under your grade on the Grandview Library website.) We’ve talked about earning and saving money and the difference between “needs” and “wants”. In coming weeks our reading and research will introduce your children to the concepts of supply and demand; goods and services; and division of labor. They will also learn a bit about the history of money. You can learn more by visiting our Economics Project Organizer.

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you at some time during the school year. Feel free to schedule a visit.

Warmly,

Mrs. Chauncey
