The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you the knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind.
It is a moral illumination.

Dear Parents,

We're only a month into the new school year and the children are settling in to their daily routines. The Kindergartners have been listening to poetry. Here are a couple of poems you can enjoy with them: "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear" and "Five Speckled Frogs". They've been moving to the rhythm of words, coloring poetry "characters", and sharing their creations with you -- don't forget to check those backpacks! And books of course:
I Am Not Going to School Today and My Five Senses. Visit grade level links to hear audio clips!

The 1st through 3rd graders are learning how to write friendly letters. The Grandview Post Office is open for business. Our 2nd grade mail carriers will begin delivering letters to classrooms at the end of this week -- October 7th. Here is a blank friendly letter and envelope that you can print -- print them as a single two-sided sheet and fold so that the envelope is on the outside -- staple at the bottom (See letter writing directions here). Your children may write letters to anyone in the school -- children in the same or different grades, teachers, support staff. I'm sure Dr. McCarthy and Mrs. Smith would love to get a letter! Our students will also write a letter to children who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. We are reading books about letter writing: The Jolly Postman, Dear Annie, Boxes for Katje and Never Mail an Elephant. Visit grade level links to hear audio clips!

Next week, our 3rd Graders will start learning about newspapers. We will publish the first Grandview newspaper, "Top of the Fold" by December. You will be able to read and "listen to" podcasts of the news stories.

Stop by anytime -- have a great October.

Mrs. Chauncey
