GROWING STORYTELLERS |
 My favorite memories are of my mom telling stories about her life as a child in Italy. These stories were shared in Italian and took on a flavor which simply couldn't be captured in any other language!
Ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends to tell stories when they visit. Turn some of these oral stories into written stories and preserve them in a story album.

Kid Cards
In June of 2008, I collaborated with Grandview's art teacher, Mrs. Geertz, to create notecards using children's artwork. The the pieces were scanned and reduced to create beautiful notecards which you may purchase from the Grandview Library website. Proceeds from sales are managed by the PTA and funds are used to build classroom libraries. This summer, we purchased chapter books for one of our second grade classrooms. Before you buy your next box of notecards, visit our store and buy Kid Cards instead. You will be supporting Grandview's literacy initiatives and enjoying children's artwork! |

Dear Parents and Friends,
Welcome to the November 2008 Grandview Library Newsletter.
Each year my family gathers for Thanksgiving in Solvay, New York, a suburb of Syracuse. Whenever I talk about trips to Solvay, I tell friends, "I am going home." My husband reminds me that we are home and we are going to visit my mom. But for me, it's still going home. Each time I step into the house where I grew up, the stories come flooding back. This year, the Solvay High School Class of '73 --- that's me -- had its 35th Reunion over the Thanksgiving weekend. What a night of storytelling, hugging, laughing, and solemn moments as we recalled classmates who were no longer with us.

After reading the book,
I Like It When, by Mary Murphy, the children created their own "I Like It When" drawings. They wrote sentences to accompany their pictures. Cheetah Research

The 2nd graders are learning about Cheetahs. We are working on note taking skills. This is not an easy skill to master, but I am seeing some light bulbs going off! Ask the children to share their Project Organizers with you. Ask them to talk about organizing facts using our forks, spoons, and knives approach. As a culminating project, we will create Cheetah booklets and video the children sharing cheetah facts.

The third graders are learning about bats. They are building on the note taking skills we practiced in first and second grade. This year, the students are tackling a more sophisticated skill -- reading several sentences and summarizing the important details in their own words. Once we finish taking notes, the children will write fiction stories about bats which incorporate factual information. If you get a chance, stop in to see our "bats in the library" thanks to Mrs. Rooney! |
