After reading the book, Max's Words by Kate Banks, the students had fun creating their own sentences using magnetic word cards. Some of the conversations and silly sentences are shared in this video.

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome to the March 2008 Grandview Library Newsletter.

Show and Tell Lion
In Kindergarten and 1st grades children listened to the book Show and Tell Lion by Barbara Abercrombie. Matthew, the main character, tells his friends that he has a lion who hikes, swims in the ocean, and takes trips to the mountains. By the end of the story, Matthew has to tell his classmates that the lion is imaginary. Your children drew and wrote about their own lions. Finally, we created audio recordings of their stories. I've shared Mrs. Miele's class on the left. See all of our "lion tales" movies in the Grandview Newspaper.

Words, Words, Words
2nd graders have been reading books about "words" and are preparing for a contest using the glossary in the book The Boy Who Loved Words by Roni Schotter. We also read Max's Words by Kate Banks and Carmine: A Little More Red by Melissa Sweet. We talked about strategies which may be employed to determine the meanings of new words which are encountered during reading. This lesson reinforced the same strategies which are taught during reading instruction in your child's classroom.

Playaway Journals
3rd graders listened to stories from other countries on our new Playaways. After listening, the children drew pictures to illustrate the story they heard, wrote a summary, and are currently creating audio recordings. I've included three of the entries to the left -- just click the play button to listen. We will complete our recordings and post the "movies" to the Grandview Newspaper after we return from our spring break.

Fantasy
The 3rd graders are working on their fantasy projects. We are reading books about dragons: The Egg by M.P. Robinson; Raising Dragons by Jerdine Nolan; The Dragonling by Jackie French Koller; and excerpts from Eragon by Christopher Paolini. Eragon would make a wonderful, challenging summer read. The children are drawing their own dragons and writing stories in our Dragon Project Organizer

Calendar Journals
Children continue to write about their lives in monthly calendar journals. From barbecues to new babies, your children have wonderful small moments to share. Even a few sentences a day helps them to become writers in the truest sense -- making simple moments come alive through words.

Road to the White House
We continue to track the primary elections. The April 22nd results will be posted once we get back from our break. The students continue to stop at our "Road To The White House" bulletin board and are eager to find out what will happen next.

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather.

Warmly,

Mrs. Chauncey
