| Dear Parents and Friends,
Welcome to the January 2008 Grandview Library Newsletter.
The Electoral Process
This month's newsletter captures a slice of history in the making. It all started when I held up a picture of Barack Obama and asked the children, "Who is this?" A few knew; the majority had no idea; some answered tentatively -- "Martin Luther King, Jr.?", "George Bush?" and so on. Well, the teachable moment was at hand and I wasn't going to miss this one.
What We Learned
We used the Super Bowl as an analogy for the electoral process. There are two major "leagues" or parties -- the Democrats and the Republicans. Their mascots are the donkey and elephant. The candidates in each party are running a race amongst themselves -- their playoffs -- to decide which Republican candidate and which Democratic candidate will appear on the ballot in the November Presidential Election (Super Bowl).
As each state holds its primary / caucus, we update our "Race to the White House" bulletin board. We also show which candidates have dropped out of the race.

Super Tuesday
On February 5th - Super Tuesday -- we held the Grandview School Exit Poll. Many of the people who voted at Grandview filled out our secret ballots. On Wednesday, we tallied the ballots and created a chart to show the results.
Keep Them Interested!
We will continue to share the unfolding of this exciting election with your children. The children know that there are six key issues that every candidate is addressing: health care, education, the economy, immigration, war and peace, and the environment.
A great site to keep up with what is happening: CNN Election 2008.
I think I got a little whiff of Spring last week.
Warmly,
Mrs. Chauncey |
