"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. "

Dear Parents,
Happy New Year and welcome to the January 2006 Grandview Library Newsletter.
I'm never sure what happens to December, but by the time the 15th rolls around, publishing a newsletter seems to be at the bottom of my to-do list. So what was at the top of the list? I'm glad you asked.
Children in Kindergarten through 3rd grades are learning or re-learning story structure. The next time you read a book with your child ask: what is the setting of the story (where and when the story takes place); who are the characters; what is the problem in this story; and how is the problem solved. Even simple picture books have problems and solutions.
The 2nd and 3rd Graders are using web based graphic organizers to write newspaper articles, book reports, and to conduct research. If you have a computer at home, ask your child to show you some of his work. (Remember to start at www.grandviewlibrary.org and then go to graphic organizers.) Two articles along with audio podcasts have been published in the school newspaper - Top Of the Fold. Articles will continue to be added once they are edited and recorded.
In January, we will learn more about a great humanitarian and human rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition, we will highlight Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Human Rights for Children as outlined by Amnesty International.
We will work on Reader's Theater plays, read books, and write about our own dreams.
See: I Have A Dream and Montgomery Bus which we will use to create displays about our dreams.
Listen to and Watch a video of the "I Have A Dream" speech - Audio / Video.
Take a Virtual Tour Of MLK Birthplace.
As always, feel free to contact me if you have questions or thoughts about the library program here at Grandview.
Warmly,
Mrs. Chauncey
