Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome to the February 2008 Grandview Library Newsletter.

Polar Bear Research
In grades K-3, we have been learning about Polar Bears. We are pairing fiction and non-fiction book selections. Of course, what children are learning, how they are learning, and what they are sharing as a result of their learning looks different at each grade level! In K-1 we read the story Snow Bear, by Fernleigh Books and acted out the story. We drew baby polar bears with Jan Brett and read her new book, The Three Snow Bears.

Note Taking
In Kindergarten and grade 1, I am the scribe and the students are fact detectives. In 2nd and 3rd grades the students work with me and then they work independently to enter facts in our Polar Bear Project Organizer.

Teleprompter Bios
A teleprompter is a device which prompts the person speaking with scolling text of a speech or script. I created a Teleprompter Project Organizer which was used by some of our 3rd graders to share their biography reports. Using a screen capture tool, I recorded the students reading their bios and created a movie. Take a look at an example below.

Calendar Journals
The 2nd and 3rd graders are working on an optional Calendar Journal Project Organizer. I am amazed at the dedication and wonderful writing that some children are producing -- just daily snippets of life as it happens. Take a look.

Road to the White House
We continue to track the primary elections. The students are checking out the results on our bulletin board and asking great questions. Keep on talking about this at home.

Spring is in the air!

Warmly,
