Abiyoyo: http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/btl07_vid_abiyoyo/ In this video segment from Between the Lions, Theo reads aloud Abiyoyo, a story about a father and son who are ostracized from their town, but end up as heroes after they confront a monster. Theo’s reading illustrates how read-alouds can tell exciting and inspiring stories about other people and places.

Pics of Visit to Mohansic Library

Born in New York state in 1952, grew up in Ohio, and now, once again, lives in New York. Life as a child was spent outdoors: in the woods and fields, running, climbing, biking, and swimming, and indoors: reading and making art. Now, as an adult, her favorite pastimes are much the same. Probably best known as the illustrator of the Biscuit books written by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and published by HarperCollins, Pat is now using her story-telling skills to create new books starring Jack and his family, published by Front Street Books, an imprint of Boyds Mills Press, Inc. Jack and Biscuit are modeled after her own two beloved dogs, Speed and Spike.

Keeping Your
Eyes on Zebra's Ears

A zebra's ears are worth watching. They tell you how the zebra is feeling. If a zebra's ears are standing straight up, it's a sign that the zebra is feeling calm. If the zebra's ears are pointed forward, then danger may be near. Ears pointed forward mean the zebra is afraid. If a zebra's ears are pointed backward, you better hope that there's a fence between you and the striped creature. Ears flattened backward are a sign of anger. The zebra may be getting ready to attack.

How Bats Use Their Ears
A bat uses its ears to find its way. Even in the darkest places, a bat has no trouble getting around. As it flies, it makes noises. Some of the bats noises are clicks. Others are screeching sounds. Many are so high people can't hear them. The bat picks up the sounds with its ears. By carefully using its ears, a bat can tell where things are. The longer it takes the sound waves to bounce back, the farther the object is. Using sound waves, bats can even find small bugs flying at high speeds. In on test, bats were able to catch more than a hundred bugs in just one minute.
